Brief
The House of Quebradas is a low-cost architectural intervention located in the nearly abandoned village of Quebradas, in rural Portugal. With only 58 square meters, this modest rehabilitation addresses two urgent challenges: the growing crisis of housing access and the abandonment of rural territories. The functional organisation of the house is through the separation of social and private areas. The entrance leads directly into the living room, which connects fluidly with the dining area and the open-plan kitchen, creating a spacious and bright environment. The materials and finishes were chosen to reinforce the honest and natural character of the intervention. Red-pigmented concrete flooring runs throughout the house. The original wooden roof structure has been restored and painted, and the ceramic tiles complete the vernacular feel of the space. The sliding doors, in white wood with black iron fittings, offer a practical and light solution that reinforces the minimalism of the intervention. The house extends to the outside through a small patio, accessible from the social area. This space acts as an extension of the house, providing natural light, cross-ventilation and an outdoor seating area.
